Candy Kush Express

All aboard the Candy Kush Express for some great tasting, blues busting, easy-growing marijuana. This strain is about as beginner friendly as you can get without actually being autoflowering, but it has plenty to offer everyone and is undoubtedly going to become a popular favourite.

Strength

Candy Kush Express

With a THC level in the mid-to-high teens, Candy Kush Express is strong enough to deliver fast-acting and effective pain relief as well as to boost your mood when you’re down. It does, however, stay comfortably within the realms of “gentle, creative lift”, rather than the “rocket fuel” of the real, high-THC strains. Once the THC has done its work, the CBD takes over and provides a long-lasting solution to both mental and physical issues. The effect is light enough that Candy Kush Express could feasibly be used in the daytime. You’d have to ensure that you left yourself plenty of time before doing anything complicated (like driving) but it would, certainly be an option. Alternatively you could keep this strain for the evening and use its “double-action” approach to deal with any pain or emotional issues which are stopping you from sleeping and then let the full-body stone which follows settle you comfortably, ready for a peaceful night’s sleep.

Yield

Assuming you leave your plants to develop to their full height, indoor yield will be in the region of 475 – 525 gr/m2, outdoor yield is likely to be around 450 – 500 gr/plant. Full height means up to about a metre indoors (although it can be much less than this) and up to two metres outdoors. In both cases, plant training can be used to keep the height down, but it will probably mean compromising on yield.

Speed

Candy Kush Express

Candy Kush Express finishes in a prompt eight weeks indoors and is ready by early September out of doors, which means that outdoor growers in all but the worst of climates should find this strain a feasible choice.

In addition to being quick, Candy Kush Express is also robust and straightforward to grow. As long as growers can manage the basics of ventilation, water and food, you should be good to collect a decent harvest. Odour is moderate, so although odour control is always a good idea, it should be much less of an issue than with some other strains.

Taste

If the name leaves you worried about this strain being overly sweet and cloying, then you can relax. Candy Kush Express’ immediate parents are Sweet Special and Royal Kush. Sweet Special is a hybrid of Grapefruit, Hawgsbreath and Cream Caramel Auto while Royal Kush is a hybrid of Afghanistan and Skunk #1, so there’s a balance of sweet flavours (Grapefruit and Cream Caramel Auto) with earthier ones (Hawgsbreath, Afghanistan and Skunk #1) and a delicious hint of cheese (Hawgsbreath). All in all, this is like eating a hearty fruit-and-cheese board.

Bag Appeal

Candy Kush Express

Candy Kush Express isn’t much to look at but it handles nicely. Nuggets are dense and chunky but split open without any hassle, releasing that lovely aroma of fruit and cheese.

While this strain is on the sweeter side over all, it’s a whole lot less “candy sweet” than the name suggests. It has rich, complex, satisfying flavours and a mouth-watering aroma. Put this together with the fact that it’s easy to grow and medically effective and it’s clear that this strain is a winner.

mango-skunk-marijuana-strain

Mango Skunk

Nirvana has been around since the 1980s but thankfully has grasped the need to move with the times and develop strains which address the needs and wants of modern patients. These days what many people want is a medicine which delivers effective results in a pleasant-tasting, easy-to-grow package and Mango Skunk delivers on all counts.

Strength

Mango Skunk

This is one of the many “new-school” strains, which offers a decent level of THC together with plenty of CBD for a real all-around package. The THC level tends to be around the 15% to 20% mark, while the CBD content is usually in the region of 1% to 5%. This is in line with a widespread modern preference for “all-round” strains, which offer the flexibility to be used for a variety of conditions, rather than “pure THC” or “pure CBD strains”.

Strains like Mango Skunk are perfect for situations where you want a combination of quick action and long-lasting benefits. For example, if you suffer from tension headaches, your immediate need is for fast and effective pain relief to stop the pain before it starts to cripple you. That’s the THC. You then want help to deal with the issues which caused the tension headache in the first place. That’s the moderate level of CBD, which will gently insist that you slow down and relax and take it easy for a while until you’re ready to face the world again. This approach can also be very effective when it comes to other sorts of pain, since dealing with pain often requires some level of rest and with today’s busy lifestyles, people can feel under pressure to get going again as soon as they feel able, rather than getting the full amount of rest needed by body and mind.

Yield

Mango Skunk offers decent yields in the region of 450-500 g/m². There are certainly bigger-yielding strains out there, but viewed as part of an all-round package, i.e. taking taste, effect and ease of growth into consideration, this has to be viewed as a reasonable return.

Speed

Mango Skunk

Mango Skunk needs nine to eleven weeks to reach its full glory, depending on which particular version of it you have. Basically there are three different versions of Mango Skunk, all of which are Indica dominant and have much the same characteristics. Two of them look like classic Indicas, with their characteristic “Christmas tree” shape, the third shows more of the Sativa influences and is rather taller and lankier and hence tends to take a bit longer to grow. Having said that, while this third variation may go over a metre if left untrained, it’s only going to be by a small amount, perhaps 10 centimetres or so, while the other two variations are unlikely to reach much higher than half a metre. In both cases, plant training will help to keep the height down.

Overall, this is a very beginner-friendly strain. If you can stay on top of the basic needs of ventilation, water and nourishment, you should have no problems with Mango Skunk. A less obvious advantage of this strain is that it has a very discrete odour, so if you’re only growing one or two plants you should have minimal odour-control issues.

Taste

Once you actually start to use this strain, you’ll soon begin to appreciate why it’s seen as a connoisseur’s variety. It’s like eating a luscious tropical fruit salad (full of mango of course), with cream and a slight touch of earthy spiciness, some people say cinnamon. The scent reflects the flavour. Although the aroma is discrete, it’s utterly delicious with the sweetness of fruit and the richness of cream, nicely counterbalanced by earth undertones, which prevent it from becoming cloying.

Bag Appeal

Mango Skunk

To be perfectly honest, Mango Skunk is nothing particularly special to look at, although there’s nothing wrong with it and the chunky nuggets certainly inspire confidence. As soon as you break those nuggets open, however, that mouth-watering perfume is released.

Whether or not Mango Skunk is the right strain for you depends on what you want. While the yield is reasonable, there are plenty of strains out there which can offer either bigger yields or the same sort of yield in less grow time. If, however, your priority is to grow a really effective and great-tasting weed, then Mango Skunk has to be a real contender.

g13-haze-admin

G13 Haze

While the origins of G13 are lost in the mists (or myths) of time, the origins of G13 Haze by Barney’s Farm date back to 2002 (or 1999 if you take them back to the time Barney’s Farm started working to stabilize their own version of the original G13). In 2007 it clearly established its own unique credentials by taking first prize in the prestigious High Times Cannabis Cup.

Strength

G13 Haze

With 22% THC, G13 Haze qualifies as a high-THC strain even these days. As such it will pummel even the most severe of conditions into submission. Use it for arthritis, serious migraines, PTSD or basically any condition where you need fast and powerful pain relief or a way to alleviate severe emotional conditions such as depression. Even though G13 Haze is very much Sativa dominant, that touch of Indica means that the overall effect ends on a smooth, gentle note, a very light, relaxing stone, which leaves patients refreshed, clear-headed and ready to face the world without bringing on a serious case of couch-lock. Because of this, even though G13 Haze is very much a daytime strain, it could feasibly be used towards evening time without taking away any chance of you being able to get to sleep, although it’s definitely not a strain we’d recommend for dealing with insomnia.

Yield

G13 Haze offers yields of up to 550 g/m2, which is very respectable for a such a compact strain. Even though it is almost purely Sativa, G13 Haze keeps its head down to about a metre indoors and a little more outdoors. As always, there is the option to use plant training to keep the height down even more.

Speed

G13 Haze

G13 Haze takes a bit longer to develop than many modern strains, flowering in nine to ten weeks (or mid October outdoors). The good news is that the addition of landrace genetics was arguably a stroke of genius on the part of Barney’s Farm. Landrace strains are known and prized for their robustness, which they bring to any human-bred strains with which they are crossed. This means that G13 Haze is a great choice for anyone new to gardening and will please even experienced gardeners with its compactness and yields. Just remember to ensure appropriate ventilation and pay attention to odour control.

Taste

The taste of G13 Haze is very similar to that of the original G13, it’s fruity, spicy and herbal with clear touches of sage and mint. We’d say that that this is a strain for people who prefer their medication on the sweeter side, but still with plenty of freshness. The aroma is what you’d expect from the description of the taste, some people have suggested it has hints of pine and citrus. Overall we’d say if you’re sharing a home with people who don’t particularly want the smell of marijuana all over the place then this would be a good choice in that you can enjoy it while you’re taking your medication and then clear it out of the air relatively easily afterwards, particularly if you use a vaporizer and place some bowls of bicarbonate of soda in the room where you are taking your medication.

Bag Appeal

G13 Haze can vary from a fairly pale green to a moderately bright green and in our view the latter is particularly appealing since it makes the orange flecks stand out more. Whatever the shade of greed, you get nice, solid, nuggets with that wonderful G13 scent.
Even established classics like G13 can benefit from being updated. G13 Haze is everything we loved about the original G13 with the addition of landrace genetics for an even easier grow. We love it.

misty-kush

Misty Kush

Misty Kush is yet another example of how the best of the old-school classics can be cross-bred to produce something even better. This strain’s immediate parents are Medusa and Master Kush. Medusa is the daughter of a three-way cross between the original Misty, White Widow and Skunk #1. In short (and this strain is conveniently short), Misty Kush has just about everything possible going for it.

Strength

Misty Kush

Even though this strain is clearly Indica dominant and has the classic Indica growing pattern, it has around 10% to 15% THC, which puts it in line with Sativa-dominant hybrids of yesteryear and it also has a decent helping of CBD, which means that this strain is a real all-rounder.

You could use it as a “wake and bake” strain for a gentle, wake-up call, rather than a strain which works like a siren, just remember to leave yourself enough time to come around smoothly from the body stone. Alternatively, you can use it for conditions such as pain, cramps and spasms or emotional conditions such as anxiety. We could even see this strain as having potential to be used for the occasional bout of insomnia. Those who suffer from regular insomnia without any clear cause, might want to look elsewhere but for those who have difficulty sleeping due to pain or emotional issues and want a combination of a quick-hit of relief and a long-term solution to see them through the night, Misty Kush could be an excellent choice.

Yield

If you really push Misty Kush to the max in a screen-of-green setup, you could feasibly get as much as 600 g/m². Amateurs can still reasonably expect 500 g/m².

Speed

Misty Kush

Indoor growers in a hurry can harvest Misty Kush in as little as eight weeks, in fact, if you’re really in a hurry you can try using a hydrophonics system, which can cut growing time by up to a week. Those looking to maximize their yields, should allow for up to ten weeks (or nine with hydrophonics) and should ideally be looking at a sea-of-green or screen-of-green system.

Outdoors, Misty Kush will generally be ready about the end of September to the start of October so growers in most of Europe should have a feasible chance of claiming their harvests before the autumn frosts. In generally, Misty Kush is about as easy to grow as any photoperiod strain can be, so as long as you pay attention to the basics of ventilation, water and nourishment, you should find this variety plain sailing and certainly suitable for amateurs.

It does, however, have to be said, that when it comes to growing, Misty Kush does have one rather obvious downside, which is that, frankly, it stinks. We don’t mean it smells, we mean it stinks. This means that indoor growers will really have to pay close attention to odour control and even outdoor growers are strongly recommended to think about prevailing winds when siting their plants (which is a good idea in any case). On the plus side, Misty Kush will stay nicely compact at a metre or less.

Taste

Even though its odour has been variously described as everything from rotting fruit to old socks, the actual end product is pure fruity goodness. If you like flavours which combine sweetness with a citrus tang (in this case lemon and mango), then you are simply going to love Misty Kush.

Bag Appeal

Misty Kush

The White Widow genetics ensure that Misty Kush quickly becomes covered in shimmering trichomes, which means that Misty Kush does look very pretty in a bag, all the more so because of its dense nuggets, which feel nice and solid in the hand. Just keep the bag closed because we really weren’t joking about the smell.

Aside from the odour issue, Misty Kush is a straightforward, undemanding strain with very respectable yields and a delicious taste.

auto-blueberry-kush

Blueberry Kush

Autoflowering strains have made frankly incredible progress over recent years and are now reaching levels of quality which put them on a par with all but the very best photoperiod strains. Auto Blackberry Kush by Dutch Passion is a terrific example of just how good modern autoflowering varieties can be.

Strength

Auto Blackberry Kush

Like many of the “new-school” Indica (dominant) strains, Auto Blackberry Kush actually has a decent amount of THC, in the region of 10% to 15%. These days, that sort of level would be classed as medium on the grounds that there are now strains (like Gorilla Glue), which have literally over twice as much, but it’s worth noting that only a few years ago, this sort of THC level would have been classed as pretty decent even for a Sativa. In other words, rating Auto Blackberry Kush as medium THC is more a reflection of developments in plant breeding than on its effectiveness at treating pain and emotional conditions.

The fact of the matter is that you’re only likely to need one of the super-high-THC strains if you’re dealing with the most serious of conditions like acute migraine. If you’re simply dealing with the likes of ordinary migraines, tension headaches, anxiety and so forth, then the sort of THC level on offer here will probably be more than enough for your needs. It’s also worth noting that, unlike many of the highest-THC strains, Auto Blackberry Kush does have a decent level of CBD too, so it combines immediate pain relief and mood-lifting qualities, with relaxing and sedative qualities too. This means that even although it’s probably best suited to daytime use, it could feasibly be used at night without leaving you buzzing around without any chance of sleep. In fact, while we wouldn’t describe this as an “insomnia strain” as such, we think it could feasibly be used to deal with stress- or pain-related insomnia in that the THC will deal with the issue which is preventing you from sleeping while the CBD will help you to relax into sleep.

Yield

Yields are pretty reasonable for an autoflowering strain, coming in at around 400 g/m², the best growers may be able to push this up to 450 g/m².

Speed

Auto Blackberry Kush

Auto Blackberry Kush grows in around eight weeks, which is fairly average for a modern strain. Part of the reason for this is because it stays fairly short. Left to grow as much as it wants, it is highly unlikely to breach the metre mark, in fact it may well stay at around 75cm. If you’re up for plant training, it can be made even more compact. What it lacks in height it makes up for in side branches, lots of them, full of bountiful buds, hence the excellent yields for such a small plant.

Overall, this variety is a good choice for anyone new to growing. Because it’s an autoflowering strain you can “set and forget” your light cycles (20/4 is recommended) and the basics of plant management are very easy. Essentially, you want to take care of ventilation and odour control and obviously make sure that your plants have an adequate supply of water and nutrients. If you can take care of these basics, you should have a smooth, hassle free grow and of course, in the unlikely event that you do have any issues, there is plenty of help on the internet.

Taste

When it comes to taste and aroma, the clue is in the name. There’s plenty of mouth-wateringly sweet blackberry together with the classic kush earthiness to balance it out. Sometimes the fruitiness takes centre stage and becomes the main flavour, although there’s always plenty of earthiness to give it body, at other times, there’s more of a balance between them.

Bag Appeal

Auto Blackberry Kush

When you hold a bag of Auto Blackberry Kush in your hands, there’s nothing obviously special about it, although all the signs of a quality weed strain are present and correct, namely dense, solid nuggets, which hold their shape until you choose to break them open. Once you start releasing that fruit scent, however, it’s a very different story.

If you like blackberry-flavoured weed and you want a level of THC which is enough to be effective without being overpowering, then Auto Blackberry Kush could be the perfect strain for you and the fact that it’s so easy to grow is a clear bonus.
